Psalm 46:10
“Be Still and Know that I AM God.”
Good morning, fellow travelers along God’s path of life.
Yesterday we looked at the words “Be Still: in the psalm scripture. The word “still” means to
not move or make a sound, calm and in deep silence. I shared with you that there was peace in silence and how to begin to silence your thoughts and minds. Today, I am focusing on the word “know” in the above scripture. The word ‘Know” has two meanings which apply here in this scripture: One is to be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information. The second one means to have developed a relationship with (someone) through meeting and spending time with them; be friendly or familiar with.
Remember from yesterday we looked at God being in the deep silence because He is the Silence. In the gospel of John there are many places where Jesus says he is “I AM”, the name God gave himself when he was talking to Moses in Exodus 3:14 “God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM”. And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.” We can also learn from the Gospel of John the many qualities of Jesus: He is also peace and calmness, our strength and our protector, the light that dispels all the darkness, our Illuminator. He is the way, the path we follow, and he is the narrow gate we travel through. He is our sustainer, and the Bread of
Life to us! He is our mediator, our good shepherd, and our caregiver. He is the true vine, which makes us productive. And, he is our Salvation, resurrection and life-giver. But how do we know all this?
As we daily come into his presence with stillness and silence we will begin to know he
is our God because of the loving relationship we build with him. It is in moving our physical
bodies into the stillness and silence of his presence that our spirit becomes more and more aware of his presence. It is in developing this relationship with him that we begin to see and understand all that he does and has done for us. We learn through experience, knowledge and feelings that God is who he says he is, can do what he says he can do and fills us with the Holy Spirit, his precious, promised gift of his grace. We become great friends, sharing in fellowship with each other.
If we chose not to be still or seek him in the stillness and silence, we will be like lost sheep (see Matthew 18:12-14 or Luke 15:3-7). I read in the book “The Mystic Path of Meditation:
Beginning a Christ-Centered Journey” by David Cole about a wise old monk. This story is a good illustration of Psalm 46:10. The story goes like this: The monk was enjoying all the
creatures and creation around him as he was meditating in the forest. A hunter, whom he knew, came across the monk and he asked him why he was wasting his time our in the forest when there was so much to be done and people to be cared for. The wise monk turned to the man and said, “Put an arrow in your bow and release it.” The hunter did as the Monk asked him. The monk repeatedly kept telling him to do this. Finally the hunter said “If I keep working my bow like this, it will soon break! It will be good for nothing.” The monk agreed and told him he was correct. He said “You know your equipment well: a bow that is too often strung tight without rest will soon break. And so it is with God’s children” Is this you right now?
We all know that our lives are out of balance now. We feel it in our bodies = illness, stress,
anger, short temperedness, etc.. We do too much and rest too little. We have lost sight of God and his desires for us all. We need to be like the wise old monk and rest more in meditation. This is a way to slow down and let our minds, bodies, and souls catch up and find the inner balance we need. It allows us to unwind, truly relax, and hear from God so that we truly know that hie is the “I AM”. I truly believe God is telling us to do this during these days of our lives.
Have a great day and build a relationship with God. Enjoy a life that does not pull or stretch you so tight that you can no longer function. “Be Still and Know That I Am God.”
May your day be blessed as you continue to grow with God along his pathway.
